Soufriere Composting Project

The Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority has partnered with the Caribbean Student Environmental Alliance Inc. (Caribbean SEA) to provide assistance to a project initiative being executed at three schools in the Soufriere basin. These schools namely; Soufriere Infant School, Soufriere Primary School and the Fond St. Jacques R.C. Primary school requested assistance in the area of waste management as part of a project dubbed; ‘Organic School Gardening in Soufriere.’ Other areas of focus for this project were aspects of environmental management, climate change resilience and sustainable development.

The Authority’s Zonal Supervisor, Mr Davis Poleon works closely with Caribbean SEA and the schools in an effort to fulfil the composting component of the project. The following is provided by the Authority’s representative:

  • Technical support for the construction of a two-chamber composting station at each of the three selected schools.
  • Workshops for the training of participants.
  • Site visits twice monthly for a six-month period to participating schools to ensure that the compost project is managed so as to guarantee a favourable end product.

Composting stations have been established and are active at all three schools.

The Authority will continue to fulfil its contribution to this project by continuing to provide assistance and support as needed until the end of the project.
